In the world of film collecting, the claim of the "find of the century" may seem like an unforgivable exaggeration. However, what discovery could possibly surpass it? Collectors had celebrated the occasional discovery of lost Keystone comedies featuring Charlie Chaplin, but no one had any inkling that there were three separate treasure troves of silent films hidden in England, France, and the United States. These treasures would, for the first time, provide insight into the working methods of the greatest figure in cinema history. The search for these treasures involved innocence and guile, as well as accidents and coincidences. It took us to Switzerland, France, and the United States. When the treasures were finally uncovered, the information they revealed was just as valuable as the films themselves. We used this material to create a television series called "Unknown Chaplin," which consisted of three hour-long documentaries produced for Thames Television. In addition to the valuable experience gained from making the series, we also acquired so much knowledge about Chaplin that we couldn't fit it into the commentary. As a result, we decided to preserve it in the form of a book.
